The Bear Surf Boards logo was created especially for Big Wednesday, and Sam's character of the surfboard maker simply known as "Bear" is portrayed as an archetypal figure in surf culture. Dozens of boards with the grizzly's head set on a red background inside a double black-and-white diamond were made as props and to be ridden in the action surf scenes. After the film was finished, demand for Bear Surf Boards continued to grow. Twenty years later, Bear is still a popular brand of surfboards in the U.S.A., Japan, Australia and Europe.

"The Bear is the old man of the sea, the one who knew where the great swells came from and why. He was the one we looked up to. He made our boards. He taught us how to ride. He taught us how to live. He taught us about courage and the meaning of friendship. Before the Bear there were other legends ... After he's gone others will carry the torch. That's why the Bear will live forever." -- John Milius (Big Wednesday Director)
